Length is a real consideration here rather than a style one. A short that sits just above the knee protects the back of the leg on hot playground equipment and against sun on the school run, while still being cool enough for the middle of the day. We keep pockets shallow and secure, because deep pockets on small children mostly collect sand. Colours are chosen to sit alongside the tees and shirts already in the drawer, so pairing is quick.
