Baby Vests and Undershirts: Do You Need Them in the UAE?

In most of the UAE's heat, a baby doesn't need a vest under a onesie. The exceptions are heavily air conditioned rooms, hospitals, and the brief cooler winter weeks, where a light cotton vest adds useful warmth without overheating a baby outdoors.

What a Baby Vest Actually Does

A vest, or undershirt, is a thin base layer worn under a onesie or outfit. Its job is simple: add a small amount of warmth and a layer of soft cotton against the skin, without changing how an outfit looks or fits over it. In cooler climates, vests are close to a daily default. In the UAE, that default doesn't automatically carry over, because the outdoor temperature for most of the year is doing the opposite job, keeping a baby cool rather than warm.

When You Probably Don't Need One in the UAE

For most of the year, outdoor and even indoor daytime temperatures in the UAE sit well above what a baby needs an extra layer to cope with. A baby in a light cotton onesie, out for a walk, at a family gathering, or anywhere without heavy air conditioning, is usually warm enough without a vest underneath. Adding one in this situation risks overheating rather than preventing a chill, and overheating is generally the thing to actively avoid with babies, more so than being slightly cool.

If your baby's chest and back feel warm and slightly damp to the touch, or their cheeks look flushed, that's a better sign to remove a layer than to add one.

When a Vest Actually Helps

The picture changes indoors. UAE malls, offices, cars, and homes often run the air conditioning cold enough that a room can feel more like a mild winter day than a summer one. A light cotton vest under a onesie is genuinely useful here, especially for a stroller ride through a heavily air conditioned mall or a long car journey with the AC on.

Hospitals are another clear case. Postnatal wards and clinics are kept cool for medical reasons, and a newborn spending their first days there benefits from that extra layer far more than they would at home in a normally ventilated room.

The UAE's cooler winter weeks, roughly the shortest and mildest stretch of the year, are the other genuine use case. Mornings and evenings can dip enough that a vest under a onesie, paired with a light layer on top, makes sense, particularly for very young babies. Newborns Are a Bit Different

In the first few weeks, babies are less able to regulate their own body temperature than they will be even a few months later. This is why a vest is more often recommended as part of a newborn layering approach, one thin layer more than an adult would wear in the same room, rather than as a year round habit. As your baby grows past the newborn stage, that extra sensitivity fades, and the UAE's heat becomes the bigger factor to plan around, not the cold. How to Tell If Your Baby Is Too Warm or Too Cold

Rather than relying on a fixed rule, check your baby directly. Feel the back of their neck or their chest, not their hands or feet, which are naturally cooler. Warm and dry is comfortable. Warm and sweaty means remove a layer. Cool to the touch, especially in a cold room or during the winter weeks, means a vest or an extra layer is worth adding back.

As a general approach for the UAE: skip the vest for outdoor time and normal indoor rooms for most of the year, keep one on hand for heavily air conditioned spaces, hospital visits, and the cooler winter weeks, and check your baby directly rather than assuming based on the season alone.

It's worth keeping a couple of light cotton vests in the wardrobe either way, even if they're not worn daily.
