Both certifications are issued by independent third-party bodies rather than self-declared by brands, which is part of why they're used as reference points at all. A brand can describe its own fabric as "safe" or "natural" without any outside verification, but a GOTS or OEKO-TEX label means an external certifier has actually checked specific, defined criteria against the product or its supply chain.

OEKO-TEX gives assurance that a finished piece has been tested for harmful residues, which is a meaningful baseline for anything worn close to skin.
